I’m Janelle, the founder of Green + Bare. I’m a mum of three who works from home in Western Australia, and I’m on a mission to help other mamas carve out time for themselves and treat skincare as self-care, not just an afterthought or another thing they “have to do.”
That was me for years. I’ve struggled with anxiety and “rushing woman syndrome” and was always putting work and everyone else’s needs before my own. When my husband and I found out we were pregnant again (pretty soon after having our third child), I had no idea how I was going to juggle four kids and my graphic design business. I love my family, but, man, I was already exhausted!
Fast forward 21 weeks, and we lost our baby girl. I was devastated and really started to withdraw. With the help of my counselor, I realised I was putting on this mask and pretending to be a strong, independent woman, when really I was struggling. And neglecting myself.
I began a journey of making time for me. I didn’t wanna go for a run – I mean, that’s good for me and all, but it’s not really something I look forward to, you know? I knew my “me time” had to be fun, creative, simple, and instantly rewarding.
One thing I did to take my mind off everything was help my friend with his soap and candle making business. Before I knew it, I was spending my evenings (after the kids finally passed out) messing around with ingredients in my kitchen.
Something funny happened. I was actually enjoying myself. And taking time for me. My anxiety decreased, and I felt happier and so much more relaxed. I’d created this special, ritualistic routine that was mine – all mine! It wasn’t rushed. It wasn’t a chore. I thought, “There’s something here!”
So I started studying natural skin care with the School of Natural Skin Care. It was super important to me to learn more about the ingredients, what they could do for my skin, and how to formulate effective combinations. I’m currently working on my own skin care line so I can help other mamas see that skincare equals self-care…and should be real, raw, and a little bit messy (kinda like life).
