If your coffee obsessed like I am, then you’ll fully understand how enchanting the aroma of coffee can be! It’s my one guilty pleasure that always brings me instant joy, and apparently there is a legitimate scientific reason for the way it makes me, and millions of others feel so giddy inside. Coffee stimulates neurotransmitters in our brain which releases those happy stimulants called dopamine and glutamate which give you those feel-good vibes.
Today I am recreating that “morning mocha magic” in a simple face mask that will give you an instant caffeine boost paired with a delectably indulgent chocolate fix that’s totally guilt free!
You can’t buy happiness but you can give yourself a chocolate face mask and that’s pretty damn close.
Let’s take a closer look into the ingredients we will be using to create our alluring mocha mask shall we?
• The Benefits of Cacao Powder for Skincare
I LOVE using cacao in my banana smoothies, because it has an antioxidant (ORAC) score of 95,500 which is 14 times more antioxidant flavonoids than red wine, 21 times more than green tea, and 7 times more than dark chocolate. Even when applied topically (like you would with this cacao face mask) it will still give you a lot of the same benefits as if you were consuming it.
Because of the high levels of antioxidants it contains, it can protect and repair the skin from damage and premature ageing. It’s also anti-inflammatory, so soothes redness and blemishes, improving the skin’s overall complexion, which is wonderful news to those who suffer from break-outs.

• Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is one of the most popular skin care ingredients due to it’s anti-bacterial properties, reducing inflammation while it’s nourishing fatty acids keeps skin feeling smooth and makes for a wonderful moisturiser.
And because it has high concentrations of MCFAs it’s easily be absorbed into the skin, it gives this cacao face mask a lovely silky smooth velvet texture, just like that of melted chocolate – you can purchase raw organic virgin coconut oil from Biome here
• Pure Coffee Oil
Or as it’s know by it’s botanical name, coffea arabica is extracted by cold pressing roasted coffee beans. This sensational oil smells just like your favourite local cafe and is used for its uplifting and energising fragrance that promotes mental alertness and can uplift your mood.
As well as making you feel like your walking on air, coffee is also crammed with high amounts of fatty acids, sterols, vitamins and antioxidants, all which provide wonderful range of skin benefits… this is music to my ears! Coffee oil is widely used in anti-aging skin care, typically in eye creams to increase elastin and collagen to lessen ageing effects like wrinkles and fine lines – you can purchase Pure Coffee Oil from iHerb here
NOTE: If you don’t have coffee oil on hand, you can substitute it with coffee grinds, you could grind them down further using a mortar and pestle to get them into a powdered form.
• Australian White Kaolin Clay
Kaolin Clay is suitable for all skin types including those with sensitive skin. It’s rich in calcium, silica, zinc and magnesium, making it ideal for oily skin.
It can be used as an exfoliator, cleanser and toner and always leaves you with a refreshed and reinvigorated complexion, it also gives this cacao face mask it’s much needed viscosity.

How to make a Raw Cacao Face Mask
For a single mask you will need:
Add all your ingredients to a wooden, ceramic or glass bowl. Mix thoroughly with a wooden spoon or spatula until all ingredients are combined and form a smooth paste. Adjust accordingly if it is too dry, or too wet adding more coconut oil or cacao.
I made this outside on a rather hot day, so my mixture quickly became pretty runny, if this happens and you feel like there is already plenty of cacao, just pop it into the fridge for 10 minutes or so and the coconut oil will solidify again making it easier to spread.
This mask will be a little runnier than your average clay mask, so make sure you’re wearing old clothing as it can get a wee bit messy, it’s totally worth it though!
Apply the mask evenly to your face, avoiding your eyes and hairline. Leave the mask on for approx 15 minutes.
To remove the cacao face mask, use a damp face cloth to wipe it all off, and rinse your face with luke warm water.
Follow your mask with your favourite moisturiser, or facial oil to prevent your skin drying out.
Note: your skin may be slightly pink after using this mask due to the kaolin clay, don’t worry as this is perfectly normal and is caused by increased blood circulation to the surface of the skin. As with all products, I advise doing a patch test before use.
